Erling Haaland: From Bryne to the Top of the Premier League
Norway's most lethal striker is rewriting Premier League records at Manchester City, and he's only just getting started.
From a Small Norwegian Town to the Top of the Premier League
Imagine a Norwegian town called Bryne. Population 12,000. Quiet streets. Small-scale football. That's where it started, in 2000, when a boy was born.
Twenty-five years later, that same boy is Manchester City's all-time top scorer. The man who broke the Premier League's single-season goals record. The new-generation number nine of European football.
His name is Erling Braut Haaland. His story is one of the fastest career rises the sport has ever seen.
Bryne: Genetics and First Steps
His father, Alf-Inge Haaland, was a professional footballer, Leeds United, Manchester City, the Norway national team. So Erling came to this game with a head start.
In 2016, aged 15, he stepped up to Bryne FK's professional squad in the Norwegian Eliteserien, not the top tier, but a real league. His height, strength, and pace were excessive for his age. Across 2017-18 he scored 16 goals in two seasons.
Europe's bigger clubs had already noticed: a young Norwegian, physically mature, goalscoring instinct unmistakable. Red Bull Salzburg completed the signing at the end of 2018.
Salzburg: The Explosion (2019)
Eighteen months at Salzburg changed football's awareness of him entirely. In the Austrian league: 16 goals in 16 matches, one per game, without exception.
The Champions League group included Liverpool, Napoli, and Genk. A 19-year-old Norwegian scored at Anfield. Scored at the San Paolo against Napoli. Finished the group stage with 8 goals in 6 matches.
So Salzburg handed him the international examination. He passed it first time.

Borussia Dortmund: Bundesliga Records (2020-22)
In January 2020, he joined Dortmund for 20 million euros. He came off the bench in his first Bundesliga match. He scored a hat-trick in 23 minutes. One goal every eight minutes or so.
Over the next two and a half seasons at Dortmund: 86 goals in 89 matches. In the Bundesliga he played in Robert Lewandowski's shadow in terms of profile, but his goal-to-game ratio overtook Bayern Munich's striker.
In the 2021 Champions League against PSG, a hat-trick. Mbappé was on the same pitch. European media suddenly placed these two names side by side, both in their early twenties, both candidates to dominate the next decade.
And then Dortmund had done its job. A larger club was needed. In the summer of 2022, Manchester City paid 60 million euros.
Manchester City: Premier League Records (2022-)
Pep Guardiola's system was associated with the false nine. He hadn't used a traditional centre-forward since Aguero left, rotating the position for four years. Haaland was a different kind of footballer. Pep adapted his system.
First season (2022-23) in the Premier League: 36 goals in 35 matches. The previous record, Andy Cole and Alan Shearer's 34 goals in 42 games, was broken. 36 goals in a 38-game season: one of the most efficient goal ratios football has ever seen. What does that mean? In a league designed to expose weaknesses, Haaland found the net almost every match.
That season Manchester City won the treble: Premier League, FA Cup, and the Champions League. Haaland lifted the cup, collected the awards, and a Norwegian striker finally stood at the summit of Europe.
The 2023-24 season was, by Haaland's standards, "normal": 27 Premier League goals, a second consecutive title. 2024-25 brought 26 more. At this point, 25+ goals per season is simply expected.
The Modern Number Nine
Which player in this generation scores goals this mechanically? The answer is short: only him.
Pace. Power. Left foot. Header. Timing. The five weapons a striker needs, gathered in a single player still under 25.
Norway had not qualified for a World Cup since 1998. They are at 2026, in a group with Argentina, Algeria, and Iraq. A Norway side with Haaland can, for the first time, dream of a quarter-final.
Because when a boy from Bryne becomes the world's most feared striker at 25, everyone wants him in their squad. And when they have him, they tend to win things. It really is that simple.
